Why Three Different Primate Treks Feel So Different
It would be easy to assume that once you have tracked one primate species through a forest, the experience repeats itself, but mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and chimpanzees could hardly feel more different from one another in the field. Gorilla trekking is slow and deliberate: groups move quietly through bamboo and vine tangles behind a guide reading fresh signs, and the payoff is an hour spent at close range with a family led by a silverback who may weigh well over 400 pounds, entirely unbothered by your presence.
Golden monkey trekking, the following morning, is a complete change of pace. These endangered primates, found only in the Albertine Rift, move constantly through the bamboo canopy in large, boisterous troops, and watching them means looking up rather than across, following flashes of orange-gold fur through the branches rather than sitting quietly with a stationary family group.
Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe is different again, and often the most physically demanding of the three. Chimpanzees range far further each day than gorillas, meaning treks can run considerably longer, and the reward is watching a genuinely dynamic social group, calling, displaying, grooming and moving through the canopy at speed. Golden monkey and chimpanzee permits are considerably less expensive individually, but together with gorilla trekking they add up to a significant portion of this trip’s overall cost.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Volcanoes National Park protects the Rwandan side of the Virunga Massif, a chain of dormant and active volcanoes shared with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is where Dian Fossey carried out much of the mountain gorilla research that first drew international attention to the species. Treks here tend to reach gorilla families faster on average than in Bwindi, since the park’s habituated groups generally range at somewhat lower altitudes on the volcanoes’ lower slopes, though the terrain is still often steep and can be muddy. Gorilla Trekking Sectors in Bwindi
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is divided into four trekking sectors — Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, and Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south — each with its own habituated gorilla families and its own character. Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda
Alongside its famous mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is home to habituated troops of golden monkeys, an endangered species found only in the Albertine Rift’s bamboo forests. These highly active, gold-and-black primates move in large groups of up to 80 individuals and are considerably more energetic and vocal than gorillas, making for a lively, fast-paced trek as they leap through the bamboo canopy.
