Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer from Kampala or Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel, residence, or Entebbe International Airport early in the morning and provide a briefing about the safari before departure.
Begin the journey to southwestern Uganda through a landscape of bustling towns, fertile farmlands, traditional villages, and rolling hills. Along the way, you will stop at the Equator crossing for photographs and an opportunity to learn about this geographical landmark.
Continue through Mbarara and the scenic districts of southwestern Uganda while enjoying views of long-horned Ankole cattle, tea plantations, terraced hillsides, and beautiful countryside.
A lunch stop will be made at a selected restaurant before continuing toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. As you approach the park, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic with mist-covered mountains and dense rainforest stretching across the horizon.
Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon or early evening. Depending on the time available, you may enjoy a short walk around the lodge, interact with local community members, or simply relax while taking in the beautiful forest views.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Experience and Community Visit
Wake up early and enjoy breakfast before transferring to the Uganda Wildlife Authority briefing center.
Park rangers will provide important information about gorilla trekking procedures, safety guidelines, and conservation efforts. You will then be assigned a habituated gorilla family and accompanied by experienced guides and trackers into the rainforest.
The trek can last anywhere from one to several hours depending on the location of the gorilla family. Along the way, you may encounter various bird species, butterflies, forest plants, and other wildlife that inhabit Bwindi.
The excitement builds as trackers communicate with ranger teams searching for the gorillas. Once the family is located, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural environment.
Watching mountain gorillas feed, groom, communicate, and care for their young is one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences on earth. The opportunity to stand just a few meters away from these gentle giants creates memories that last a lifetime.
After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and some relaxation.
In the afternoon, enjoy a community visit where you can learn about local traditions, culture, and daily life around Bwindi. Depending on the location, the experience may include traditional dances, craft demonstrations, visits to community projects, or interactions with local residents.

After breakfast, check out of the lodge and begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe.
Enjoy another opportunity to admire the stunning scenery of southwestern Uganda as you travel through hills, valleys, and rural communities. A lunch stop will be made along the way before continuing toward central Uganda.
You may make another brief stop at the Equator crossing for refreshments and photographs before proceeding to your final destination.
Arrive in Kampala or Entebbe in the late afternoon or evening, where your driver-guide will drop you off at your hotel, residence, or Entebbe International Airport, marking the end of your gorilla trekking safari.

This length suits travelers who specifically want the gorilla trekking experience without adding further destinations, whether as a standalone trip or as a focused addition to a longer regional itinerary elsewhere in East Africa.
Practical Notes
A Uganda e-visa or East Africa Tourist Visa, arranged before travel, is required for most nationalities, along with a yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with risk of transmission. Travel insurance covering trekking activities and medical evacuation is strongly recommended, and malaria prevention is worth discussing with a travel health clinic ahead of your trip.
US dollars printed after 2009 are widely accepted for park fees, permits and lodge bills, while Ugandan shillings are more practical for tips and smaller day-to-day purchases.
Because permits and lodge availability are limited, particularly during the June to September and December to February peak seasons, we recommend booking this itinerary at least three to four months in advance for peak-season travel.
Tipping is customary though not compulsory. Rangers and trackers typically receive a tip at the end of any trekking or guided activity, scaled to group size, while your driver-guide is usually tipped separately at the end of the full trip.

Trekking days at Bwindi start early with a briefing at park headquarters, where rangers assign trekkers to gorilla families based on fitness level and group size. Because this is a genuinely physical activity involving steep, often muddy terrain, a reasonable level of fitness matters, though porters are available at the trailhead to assist with the climb and carry gear for travelers who want the extra support.

This itinerary is deliberately kept simple and focused, avoiding the temptation to add further destinations that would dilute the trip’s core purpose: giving you a proper, unhurried gorilla trekking experience without unnecessary complexity. The first day covers the transfer from Entebbe or Kampala to the Bwindi region, generally an eight to ten hour drive broken up with scenic stops, or a shorter scheduled flight to a nearby airstrip for travelers wanting to save road time. The second day is the trek itself, and the third covers your return journey.
Because this itinerary involves only a single trekking day, sector allocation, whichever of Bwindi’s four sectors, Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga or Nkuringo, your permit is assigned to, has an outsized effect on your overall experience, since there is no second day to adjust if the terrain proves more demanding than expected. Only a limited number of gorilla trekking permits are issued for Bwindi each day, one per visitor per habituated family, which keeps groups small and disturbance to the gorillas to a minimum — a maximum of eight visitors are allowed with each family per day. Because demand regularly outstrips supply during the peak dry seasons, permits are best secured well in advance of travel; we handle the full booking process through the Uganda Wildlife Authority as part of your itinerary so you arrive with everything confirmed. Each permit covers one hour with the gorillas once they are located, though the trek itself to reach them is unregulated in length. Visitors under fifteen years of age and anyone showing symptoms of a communicable illness are not permitted to trek, a rule designed to protect the gorillas, which share close to 98% of human DNA and are highly susceptible to human respiratory infections.
