Detailed Itinerary(Bwindi gorillas & Lake Mburo)
Day 1: Transfer from Entebbe or Kampala to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Your safari begins with an early morning pick-up from Kampala or Entebbe. You will drive southwest towards Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, passing through Uganda’s countryside, local villages, farms, and beautiful landscapes.
You will stop at the Equator crossing for photographs and a short experience before continuing through Mbarara and the scenic Kigezi Highlands. As you approach Bwindi, the landscape changes into green hills, forests, and mountain views.
Upon arrival, you will check into your lodge near the forest, relax, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the following day’s gorilla trekking adventure.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi and Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park
After breakfast, you will proceed to the park headquarters for a gorilla trekking briefing. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers will provide information about trekking guidelines and assign you to a gorilla family.
You will enter Bwindi’s ancient rainforest and begin your search for mountain gorillas. The trek can take between two and eight hours depending on the location of the gorilla family. When you find the gorillas, you will spend one hour observing them as they feed, play, rest, and interact within the forest.
After the trek, you will return for lunch before starting your transfer to Lake Mburo National Park. Upon arrival, you will check into your lodge, relax, and enjoy dinner.

Day 3: Lake Mburo Game Drive, Boat Cruise and Optional Activities
You will begin the day with an early morning game drive in Lake Mburo National Park. The park is famous for its large populations of zebras, giraffes, impalas, buffaloes, elands, topis, waterbucks, and warthogs.
Your guide will take you through the savannah while explaining the wildlife and ecosystem of the park. You may also spot different bird species and, with luck, predators such as leopards and hyenas.
After the game drive, return to the lodge for breakfast before enjoying a boat cruise on Lake Mburo. The cruise provides excellent views of hippos, crocodiles, and water birds along the shoreline.
The afternoon can be spent relaxing at the lodge or enjoying optional activities around the park.

Day 4: Transfer from Lake Mburo National Park to Entebbe or Kampala
After breakfast, you will check out and begin your return journey to Kampala or Entebbe International Airport.
You will have a final opportunity to enjoy Uganda’s countryside scenery and stop at the Equator crossing for photography, shopping, and refreshments before continuing to your final destination.
Your guide will drop you off at your hotel or the airport, marking the end of your safari.

Pairing Gorilla Trekking With Lake Mburo
This itinerary pairs Bwindi’s mountain gorilla trekking with Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s smallest savannah park and a genuinely different landscape from the dense forest of Bwindi. Lake Mburo’s open acacia woodland and rolling hills hold zebra, eland and impala, species not found in Uganda’s other major parks, alongside healthy populations of buffalo and a substantial hippo population in the lake itself.
Because Lake Mburo sits directly along the main road between Kampala and Bwindi, this itinerary uses it efficiently as a stopover rather than a detour, breaking up the otherwise long transfer between the capital and the trekking sectors in the southwest.
A Walking Safari Option
Lake Mburo is one of the few Uganda parks where walking safaris are permitted with an armed ranger, offering a genuinely different way to experience the bush than a vehicle-based game drive, on foot and at a slower, more attentive pace, particularly rewarding for birdwatchers given the park’s rich birdlife.
A boat trip on Lake Mburo itself is also commonly added, bringing you close to hippo pods and water birds along the shoreline in a similarly relaxed, low-impact way.
Visa, Health and Currency
A Uganda e-visa or East Africa Tourist Visa, arranged before travel, is required for most nationalities, along with a yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with risk of transmission. Travel insurance covering trekking or wildlife activities and medical evacuation is strongly recommended, and malaria prevention is worth discussing with a travel health clinic ahead of your trip, particularly given this itinerary’s mix of forest and lower-altitude savannah environments.
US dollars printed after 2009 are widely accepted for park fees, permits and lodge bills, while Ugandan shillings are more practical for tips, markets and smaller day-to-day purchases. Mobile network coverage is generally reliable at lodges and along main routes but becomes patchy inside the parks themselves.
Booking Notes and Tipping
Because permits and lodge availability are limited, particularly during the June to September and December to February peak seasons, we recommend booking this itinerary at least three to four months in advance for peak-season travel, with some flexibility possible for shoulder-season dates.
Tipping is customary though not compulsory across this itinerary. Rangers and trackers typically receive a tip at the end of any trekking activity, scaled to group size, while your driver-guide is usually tipped separately at the end of the full trip. We’re glad to advise on typical tipping ranges when you book.
Vehicle and Photography Notes
A private 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof is used throughout this itinerary, suited to both game-viewing tracks and the region’s paved and unpaved connecting roads, with an experienced English-speaking driver-guide accompanying you for the full trip.
Photography opportunities range from close primate encounters in Bwindi’s dense forest to the open, easier-light savannah of Lake Mburo, worth packing a versatile zoom lens to cover both environments well.
Physical Preparation for Gorilla Trekking
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is graded as moderate to strenuous depending on where the assigned family is ranging that day. Trails climb steep, muddy ridges through tangled vegetation, and altitude in the park ranges from roughly 1,160 to 2,607 metres, so a reasonable level of fitness helps considerably. Porters are available at the trailhead for a small fee and are worth hiring — they carry daypacks, offer a steadying hand on slick sections, and their fee directly supports the local community bordering the park. Waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support, a long-sleeved shirt and trousers to guard against nettles and safari ants, gardening gloves, and a rain jacket are the essentials most trekkers wish they had packed. Because Bwindi sits in a genuine rainforest, showers are possible in any month, so dressing in breathable layers rather than heavy clothing keeps the trek comfortable.
Wildlife and Activities at Lake Mburo
Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda’s smallest savannah park, is unique among the country’s protected areas in permitting both walking safaris and horseback rides among its wildlife, an experience not possible in parks with predators as dominant as elsewhere in the country. Zebra, impala, eland, topi and warthog are common sightings, and the park is one of the best places in Uganda to see the localised impala for which it is named. A boat trip on Lake Mburo itself brings sightings of hippo, crocodile and a wide range of water birds, including the African fish eagle. Its position just off the main highway between Kampala and the southwestern parks makes it a convenient and worthwhile stopover on longer itineraries heading toward Bwindi or the Rwanda border.
Wildlife Photography Tips
Early morning and late afternoon light, when the sun sits low and animals are most active, consistently produces the strongest wildlife photographs, which is part of why most game drives are scheduled around dawn and dusk rather than the middle of the day. A telephoto lens in the 100-400mm range covers most safari situations, though a wide-angle lens is worth having for landscape shots and for scenes where wildlife is close enough to include the surrounding habitat. Resting a camera on a beanbag across the vehicle’s window frame, rather than relying purely on handheld shots, noticeably improves sharpness, especially in the low light typical of early morning game drives.
