Rwanda’s Forest Restoration Story
To understand why Gishwati-Mukura National Park matters, it helps to know what this landscape looked like only three decades ago. Through the late twentieth century, the Gishwati Forest, once part of a vast forest belt stretching across Rwanda’s western highlands, was reduced by roughly 99 percent through a combination of agricultural expansion, cattle ranching, and the displacement pressures that followed the 1994 genocide, when large numbers of returning refugees settled and cleared land across the region. By the early 2000s, what had been one of Central Africa’s significant montane forests had shrunk to a few scattered, badly degraded fragments.
What followed is one of the more genuinely hopeful conservation stories in the region. Beginning in the mid-2000s, a coordinated effort involving the Rwandan government, international conservation partners and local communities began actively replanting native tree species, stabilising slopes prone to erosion and landslides, and reconnecting the fragmented forest patches. The Mukura Forest, a separate, better-preserved block to the south, was incorporated alongside the recovering Gishwati block, and in 2015 the combined area was formally gazetted as Gishwati-Mukura National Park, Rwanda’s fourth and newest national park.

Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda
