14 Days Uganda Safari - Northern Circuit
Overview
The 14 Days Uganda Safari – Northern Circuit is a complete two-week wildlife and cultural expedition through the parts of Uganda that most standard safaris skip entirely. This trip touches iconic sites including Kidepo Valley National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, Budongo Forest, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and Sipi Falls, with a strong emphasis on cultural encounters alongside the wildlife: expect to meet the Ik and Karamojong people, join community visits, go abseiling at Sipi Falls, cruise the Nile beneath Murchison Falls, and track chimpanzees and rhinos on foot.
Where a typical Uganda circuit stays in the south and west of the country, this northern route takes you into Karamoja, a semi-arid region bordering South Sudan and Kenya that few visitors ever reach, before looping back through the Rift Valley’s crater lakes and Mount Elgon’s coffee country.
This is a private, fully customisable itinerary. Our driver-guides adjust the pace, lodge tier and activity list to match your travel dates and interests before you book.
Fourteen days also gives this trip room to breathe in a way a shorter safari cannot. Rather than a single overnight stop in each park before moving on, you get two full nights around Murchison Falls, two full days inside Kidepo Valley itself, and a genuine cultural exchange with Ik and Karamojong hosts rather than a rushed roadside photo stop. The trade-off is real driving distance, particularly on the run north into Karamoja, but it is the only way to reach a part of Uganda that most itineraries never attempt.
Your Destinations in Depth
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Uganda’s only population of wild rhinos lives here, following the species’ local extinction during the political upheaval of the 1980s. A guided tracking walk brings you on foot to within a safe distance of southern white rhinos grazing in their natural habitat, a rare experience found almost nowhere else on the continent.
Murchison Falls National Park
Uganda’s largest national park is named for the point where the entire Victoria Nile is forced through a gorge less than eight metres wide before plunging 43 metres into the gorge below. Its northern savannah supports elephants, giraffes, buffaloes and lions, while the river itself holds one of East Africa’s densest hippo and crocodile populations.
Budongo Forest
One of Uganda’s largest surviving mahogany forests, Budongo is home to roughly 800 chimpanzees along with a rich variety of forest birds and butterflies, and offers a quieter, less crowded chimp-tracking alternative to Kibale.
Kidepo Valley National Park
Tucked into Uganda’s far northeastern corner against the South Sudan and Kenya borders, Kidepo’s dry Narus Valley supports cheetahs, ostriches and large buffalo herds against a backdrop of the Morungole and Napore mountain ranges, with a fraction of the visitor traffic of Uganda’s southern parks.
The Ik and Karamojong Communities
The Ik, one of Uganda’s smallest ethnic groups, live in the mountains bordering Kidepo Valley, while the Karamojong, traditional semi-nomadic cattle keepers, occupy the surrounding plains. Guided community visits here focus on genuine cultural exchange rather than staged performance, covering everything from cattle-keeping traditions to local craft-making. Both communities have historically lived somewhat apart from Uganda’s mainstream tourism circuit, which means a visit here supports livelihoods in a region tourism revenue rarely reaches, while giving travellers a far more candid picture of rural Karamoja life than a staged cultural show elsewhere in the country.
Sipi Falls
Set on the lower slopes of Mount Elgon among Arabica coffee farms, Sipi is actually three separate waterfalls, the tallest dropping around 100 metres. Abseiling down the main falls is one of the region’s signature activities, alongside guided hikes and farm-to-cup coffee tours.

Best Time to Go
The dry seasons, December to February and June to September, give the easiest driving conditions on the long stretch north into Karamoja and the best game viewing in Kidepo’s Narus Valley, when wildlife concentrates around the remaining water sources. Sipi Falls and Budongo Forest are enjoyable year-round, though the falls carry noticeably more water and the abseil feels more dramatic during the wetter months of March to May and October to November.
Fitness and What to Pack
This itinerary is more about long game drives and cultural walks than strenuous trekking, with the exception of the optional Sipi Falls abseil, which requires no prior experience but a reasonable comfort with heights. Budongo’s chimp tracking involves a moderate forest walk of one to three hours.
- Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking boots
- Sun protection and a wide-brimmed hat for Kidepo’s open plains
- A warm layer for cool mornings and evenings in Karamoja and Sipi
- Insect repellent
- Binoculars for game drives and birding
- A reusable water bottle
Conservation and Community Impact
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is run by the Rhino Fund Uganda, a conservation trust working to reintroduce rhinos to Uganda’s national parks after their local extinction; your visit fee funds ranger patrols and veterinary care for the sanctuary’s herd. In Karamoja, cultural visits to Ik and Karamojong communities are arranged directly with local hosts, putting income straight into a region that receives far less national development investment and far fewer visitors than southern Uganda.
Kidepo Valley’s park fees similarly fund Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger patrols across one of the country’s most difficult terrains to police against poaching, precisely because the park’s remoteness that makes it so rewarding to visit also makes conservation funding harder to come by than in Uganda’s more frequently visited southern parks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose the Northern Circuit over a standard Uganda safari?
This route reaches destinations that most week-long Uganda itineraries never touch, particularly Kidepo Valley and the Karamoja region, giving you Uganda’s wildlife highlights alongside genuinely off-the-beaten-path culture and scenery.
Is the drive to Kidepo Valley worth it?
Most travellers who make the journey say yes. The distance is real, but a light-aircraft option is available if you would rather spend your time in the park than on the road.
Do I need any special fitness for the Sipi Falls abseil?
No technical experience is required; qualified local guides handle the ropework and safety equipment. It is entirely optional, and travellers who prefer to skip it can hike to the falls instead.
What vaccinations and visas do I need for Uganda?
Most nationalities can apply for a Uganda e-visa online before travel, and a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry. We recommend consulting a travel health clinic about malaria prevention as well.
Can this itinerary be shortened?
Yes, we can trim this to around 10 days by reducing time in Karamoja or replacing the Kidepo road transfer with a flight, though the full 14 days gives the most complete picture of northern Uganda.
Is Karamoja safe to visit?
Yes. Karamoja has seen significant improvements in security over the past decade and is now a well-established, if still lightly visited, part of Uganda’s tourism circuit. Our guides travel this route regularly and stay in direct contact with our office throughout the trip.
What currency should I carry?
US dollars printed after 2009 are widely accepted for park fees and lodge bills, while Uganda shillings are more practical for local markets and community visits in Karamoja. Cash is more useful here than in Uganda’s more touristed south, since card facilities are limited in remote areas.
How physically demanding is this trip?
Aside from the optional Sipi Falls abseil and moderate forest walking in Budongo, this is primarily a vehicle-based safari with cultural walks, making it accessible to most reasonably fit travellers regardless of age.
How does this differ from Uganda’s classic gorilla safari circuit?
Uganda’s classic circuit runs through Bwindi, Kibale and Queen Elizabeth in the south and west, and is built primarily around primate trekking. This Northern Circuit instead heads into Murchison Falls, Karamoja and Kidepo Valley, trading gorilla trekking for wide-open wilderness, rhino tracking and cultural depth. Many of our travellers combine both circuits into a single longer trip rather than choosing one over the other.
Will I see other tourists on this route?
Rarely, once you pass Murchison Falls. Kidepo Valley receives a small fraction of the visitor numbers that Uganda’s southern parks do, and it is common to have entire game drives or cultural visits without encountering another vehicle.
Photography Notes
Kidepo’s open Narus Valley offers some of the clearest, most dramatic safari light in Uganda, particularly in the hour after the morning game drive begins, and rewards a longer lens for distant cheetah and buffalo sightings. Sipi Falls, by contrast, calls for a wide-angle lens to capture the full drop of the waterfalls against the coffee terraces below. Batteries and memory cards should be stocked up before Kidepo, since shops and charging points become scarce the further north you travel.
Extend This Trip
- Bwindi gorilla trekking add-on: combine this northern route with a few days in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest for mountain gorilla trekking before your departure.
- Extra Kidepo nights: add a night or two to visit the Kanangorok hot springs or extend cultural time with Ik and Karamojong hosts.
- Rwanda extension: a short flight from Entebbe connects to Kigali for gorilla or golden monkey trekking in Volcanoes National Park.
Why Travel With All in Africa Safaris
Northern circuit itineraries like this one require guides who genuinely know the route, since lodges are sparser and distances longer than Uganda’s more visited southern parks. Our driver-guides have run this exact circuit into Karamoja and Kidepo for years and maintain direct relationships with the Ik and Karamojong hosts who welcome our travellers, rather than working through a third-party cultural tour broker. Every lodge, activity and pace on this page can be adjusted to your interests before you book, and our office stays reachable throughout your trip.
Group Sizes and Vehicles
This safari runs privately for your party, using a 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof hatch, sized to your group. A single driver-guide accompanies you for the full 14 days, which matters more on this route than most, since local knowledge of the Karamoja roads, seasonal river crossings and community protocols around Kidepo makes a meaningful difference to how smoothly the trip runs.
Health, Insurance and Travel Documents
Comprehensive travel insurance covering trip cancellation, medical evacuation and adventure activities such as abseiling and white-water rafting is strongly recommended, given how remote parts of this route become, particularly around Kidepo Valley and Karamoja, where specialist medical care is a longer distance away than travellers are typically used to. Carry a passport valid at least six months beyond your travel dates, your approved Uganda e-visa, and your yellow fever certificate, keeping copies separate from the originals.
A Region Worth the Distance
Travellers who complete this circuit consistently mention the same thing: Karamoja and Kidepo feel like a different country from the Uganda most people picture. The plains are drier, the pace of life slower, and the wildlife sightings often come without another vehicle in sight. It is precisely because this region sees so few visitors that the encounters here, whether with a cheetah on the Narus plains or an elder in an Ik homestead, tend to feel less rehearsed and more genuine than in Uganda’s busier southern parks.
