Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer from Entebbe or Kampala to Kidepo Valley National Park
After an early breakfast, depart Kampala or Entebbe and begin the journey to Kidepo Valley National Park. The drive takes you through northern Uganda, passing rural communities, open plains, and beautiful countryside landscapes.
Arrive in Kidepo in the evening and check into your lodge. Relax and enjoy the stunning wilderness surroundings before dinner.

Day 2: Morning and Afternoon Game Drives in Kidepo Valley National Park
Start the day with an early morning game drive in the famous Narus Valley, the most wildlife-rich area of the park.
The valley’s permanent water sources attract large numbers of wildlife including elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, waterbucks, hartebeests, and predators such as lions and leopards. Kidepo is also one of the few places in Uganda where cheetahs can be seen.
Return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation before heading out for an afternoon game drive to explore different sections of the park.
As the sun begins to set, enjoy spectacular views across the vast plains and surrounding mountains.

Day 3: Kidepo Valley Exploration and Karamojong Cultural Experience
After breakfast, embark on a game drive towards the Kidepo Valley, known for its dramatic landscapes and seasonal riverbeds.
This part of the park offers opportunities to spot ostriches, buffaloes, antelopes, and a variety of bird species while enjoying some of the most beautiful scenery in Uganda.
Later, visit a Karamojong community and learn about the traditions, lifestyle, dances, and customs of one of East Africa’s most fascinating pastoral cultures.
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Uganda’s Most Remote Park
Kidepo Valley National Park, in Uganda’s far northeastern corner near the South Sudan and Kenya borders, is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most spectacular yet least-visited parks. Its rugged, semi-arid landscape of savannah plains framed by the Morungole and Napore mountain ranges looks distinctly different from Uganda’s more forested southern parks, closer in character to Kenya’s northern reserves than to Bwindi or Queen Elizabeth.
Because Kidepo sees a fraction of the visitors that Uganda’s more accessible parks receive, largely due to its remote location and longer travel time, a safari here offers a genuinely uncrowded experience, wildlife sightings without other vehicles nearby, and landscapes that feel remarkably untouched.
Wildlife Found Nowhere Else in Uganda
Kidepo holds several species not found in any other Ugandan park, including cheetah, striped hyena and the greater and lesser kudu, alongside healthy populations of lion, elephant, buffalo and giraffe. The park’s Narus Valley, with its permanent water sources, concentrates wildlife reliably even during the dry season when surrounding areas turn arid.
Getting to Kidepo typically means a scheduled flight from Entebbe to the park’s airstrip, since the overland route from Kampala takes a full day or more given the distance involved; we generally recommend flying in for this itinerary to preserve more time for the park itself.
Practical Notes
A Uganda e-visa or East Africa Tourist Visa, arranged before travel, is required for most nationalities, along with a yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with risk of transmission. Travel insurance covering trekking or wildlife activities and medical evacuation is strongly recommended, and malaria prevention is worth discussing with a travel health clinic ahead of your trip.
US dollars printed after 2009 are widely accepted for park fees, permits and lodge bills, while Ugandan shillings are more practical for tips and smaller day-to-day purchases. Mobile network coverage is generally reliable at lodges and along main routes but becomes patchy inside the parks themselves.
Because permits and lodge availability are limited, particularly during the June to September and December to February peak seasons, we recommend booking this itinerary at least three to four months in advance for peak-season travel.

Kidepo’s open, semi-arid landscape offers excellent light for photography across most of the day, unlike the more filtered light of Uganda’s forested parks, making a wider range of lenses useful here than for a purely forest-based itinerary.
Given the park’s remoteness, we recommend confirming your flight and lodge arrangements well ahead of travel, and our team remains reachable throughout your trip for any adjustments needed once you’re on the ground.
Gorilla Permits and Booking
Only a limited number of gorilla trekking permits are issued for Bwindi each day, one per visitor per habituated family, which keeps groups small and disturbance to the gorillas to a minimum — a maximum of eight visitors are allowed with each family per day. Because demand regularly outstrips supply during the peak dry seasons, permits are best secured well in advance of travel; we handle the full booking process through the Uganda Wildlife Authority as part of your itinerary so you arrive with everything confirmed. Each permit covers one hour with the gorillas once they are located, though the trek itself to reach them is unregulated in length. Visitors under fifteen years of age and anyone showing symptoms of a communicable illness are not permitted to trek, a rule designed to protect the gorillas, which share close to 98% of human DNA and are highly susceptible to human respiratory infections.
Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise
The Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway linking Lake Edward and Lake George inside Queen Elizabeth National Park, is home to one of the largest concentrations of hippopotamus in Africa alongside Nile crocodiles, buffalo herds and an exceptional variety of water birds including pelicans, kingfishers and African fish eagles. A two-hour launch cruise along the channel is one of the most reliable wildlife-viewing activities in the park because animals gather along the banks to drink, offering close, unhurried sightings that game drives cannot always guarantee. The cruise is included as a core activity on itineraries through Queen Elizabeth and runs at set times in the late morning and afternoon to align with when wildlife activity along the water is highest.
Karamojong Culture Near Kidepo
The communities surrounding Kidepo Valley National Park are largely Karamojong, semi-nomadic pastoralists whose way of life, dress and homestead architecture differ markedly from the rest of Uganda and have changed comparatively little over generations. A visit to a Karamojong manyatta, arranged respectfully through local guides, offers insight into cattle-centred traditions, beadwork and community structures that are increasingly rare to encounter firsthand. Combined with the park’s wildlife, this cultural dimension is part of why travellers who make the journey to Kidepo often rank it among the most rewarding stops on a longer Uganda itinerary.
Packing Tips for Combined Safari and Trekking Itineraries
Itineraries that combine game drives with forest or mountain activity call for slightly different kit than a pure savannah safari — sturdy, broken-in hiking boots rather than sandals, a rain jacket regardless of season since forest weather is less predictable than open plains, and a daypack for carrying water and a camera on any walking portion of the trip. Soft-sided duffel bags rather than rigid suitcases are strongly preferred for any leg of the journey involving light aircraft, since cargo space on small charter planes is limited and hard-sided luggage often will not fit. A universal power adapter and a portable charger are also worth including, since some safari lodges rely on generator power available only at set hours.
