Once located, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing the gorillas as they feed, rest, groom, and interact with one another in their natural habitat.

After the trekking experience, return to the starting point where you will receive your gorilla trekking certificate.

Enjoy lunch before departing for Queen Elizabeth National Park through the scenic Ishasha sector, famous for its tree-climbing lions. Depending on luck and time available, you may spot these unique lions resting in fig trees.

Return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation.

In the afternoon, enjoy a boat cruise along the Kazinga Channel, one of the highlights of any visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park. The channel supports one of the highest concentrations of hippos in Africa and attracts large numbers of animals and birds along its shores.

You may see elephants, buffaloes, crocodiles, waterbucks, monitor lizards, and numerous bird species during the cruise.

Return to the lodge in the evening.

Gorillas and Wildlife in Four Days

This itinerary condenses Bwindi gorilla trekking and a savannah wildlife component into a focused four-day trip, suited to travelers with a tighter schedule who still want both of Uganda’s headline experiences rather than choosing one over the other.

Because four days leaves less buffer than our longer combined itineraries, sector allocation and routing are planned carefully to minimize unnecessary transfer time between the trekking and wildlife-viewing portions of the trip.

Practical Notes

A Uganda e-visa or East Africa Tourist Visa, arranged before travel, is required for most nationalities, along with a yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with risk of transmission. Travel insurance covering trekking or wildlife activities and medical evacuation is strongly recommended, and malaria prevention is worth discussing with a travel health clinic ahead of your trip, particularly given time spent in lower-altitude savannah areas where mosquito exposure tends to be higher than in Uganda’s cooler forest destinations.

US dollars printed after 2009 are widely accepted for park fees, permits and lodge bills across this itinerary, while Ugandan shillings are more practical for tips, markets and smaller day-to-day purchases along the route. Mobile network coverage is generally reliable at lodges and along the main connecting roads, though it becomes patchy or unavailable inside the parks and forest reserves themselves.

Because permits and lodge availability are limited, particularly during the June to September and December to February peak seasons, we recommend booking this itinerary at least three to four months in advance for peak-season travel, with somewhat more flexibility available for the quieter shoulder months of March to May and September to November.

Tipping is customary though not compulsory across this itinerary. Rangers, trackers and guides typically receive a tip at the end of any trekking or guided activity, generally scaled to group size, while your driver-guide is usually tipped separately at the end of the full trip given their role extends across every day of the itinerary rather than a single activity.

A private 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced English-speaking driver-guide accompanies you for the entire trip, handling both park game-viewing tracks and the road transfers this itinerary involves, with the same guide staying with you throughout rather than being swapped at each destination.

Who This Itinerary Suits

This condensed four-day format suits travelers with genuinely limited time who still want both gorilla trekking and a wildlife component rather than choosing one over the other, accepting a tighter schedule in exchange for covering both experiences within a short trip.

Travelers with more flexibility on dates often find our five or six day versions of this same combination more comfortable, since the extra day or two reduces the back-to-back scheduling this shorter itinerary requires between the trek and the wildlife-viewing portion of the trip.

Gorilla Trekking Sectors in Bwindi

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is divided into four trekking sectors — Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, and Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south — each with its own habituated gorilla families and its own character. Buhoma offers the gentlest terrain and is the most established sector, with lodges close to the park gate. Rushaga has the highest concentration of habituated families and is also where gorilla habituation experience permits are issued, allowing visitors extended time with a family that is still being acclimatised to human presence. Ruhija sits at higher altitude with cooler mornings, while Nkuringo is known for its steep ridgeline approach and rewarding views over the forest canopy. Your guide assigns you to a specific family the morning of the trek based on fitness level and permit allocation, and treks can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours of hiking through dense, humid rainforest before the encounter.

Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

The Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway linking Lake Edward and Lake George inside Queen Elizabeth National Park, is home to one of the largest concentrations of hippopotamus in Africa alongside Nile crocodiles, buffalo herds and an exceptional variety of water birds including pelicans, kingfishers and African fish eagles. A two-hour launch cruise along the channel is one of the most reliable wildlife-viewing activities in the park because animals gather along the banks to drink, offering close, unhurried sightings that game drives cannot always guarantee. The cruise is included as a core activity on itineraries through Queen Elizabeth and runs at set times in the late morning and afternoon to align with when wildlife activity along the water is highest.

Safari Vehicles and Getting Around

Most game drives are conducted in a 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof, allowing you to stand for unobstructed photography and viewing while remaining shaded from direct sun. On itineraries that combine several parks across a wide area, internal flights on light aircraft are often used to cut down long road transfers, particularly between remote parks like Kidepo Valley or across the wider Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, while road transfers between closer parks allow more scenery and a chance to pass through local towns and villages along the way. Your guide-driver typically stays with you for the full ground portion of the trip, providing continuity and increasingly detailed local knowledge as the days progress.

Choosing Accommodation on Safari

Safari accommodation ranges from simple tented camps with shared facilities to luxury lodges with private plunge pools, and the right choice depends more on personal priorities than on the quality of wildlife viewing available at each level. Mid-range lodges and permanent tented camps generally strike a good balance of comfort, character and value, often built with open-sided common areas that let you watch wildlife from the dining area or deck without needing to leave camp. Because many of the best-located properties have limited rooms, especially inside national parks rather than on their boundaries, booking accommodation early is often more time-sensitive than booking the safari itself, particularly for travel during peak dry-season months.

Wildlife Photography Tips

Early morning and late afternoon light, when the sun sits low and animals are most active, consistently produces the strongest wildlife photographs, which is part of why most game drives are scheduled around dawn and dusk rather than the middle of the day. A telephoto lens in the 100-400mm range covers most safari situations, though a wide-angle lens is worth having for landscape shots and for scenes where wildlife is close enough to include the surrounding habitat. Resting a camera on a beanbag across the vehicle’s window frame, rather than relying purely on handheld shots, noticeably improves sharpness, especially in the low light typical of early morning game drives.
