This 14-day itinerary perfectly blends thrilling wildlife encounters, tranquil landscapes, and cultural experiences, showcasing the best of Tanzania and Uganda.

A Comprehensive Two-Country Circuit

This fourteen-day itinerary combines Tanzania’s classic northern circuit, typically the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire, with Uganda’s primate trekking highlights, Bwindi gorillas and Kibale Forest chimpanzees, giving travelers a genuinely comprehensive picture of East Africa’s savannah and forest ecosystems within a single extended trip.

Connecting Tanzania and Uganda typically involves a regional flight given the distance between the two countries, and this itinerary is structured to make that connection efficient, preserving as much time as possible for the parks themselves rather than travel days.

Why Combine These Two Countries

Tanzania and Uganda offer genuinely complementary experiences rather than overlapping ones: Tanzania’s northern circuit for classic Big Five and Great Migration wildlife viewing across open plains, and Uganda for primate trekking through dense montane and lowland forest, a range few single-country itineraries anywhere in Africa can match.

This length gives real time to both halves of the trip rather than rushing through either, with rest days built in around the itinerary’s more demanding trekking and game-drive activities to keep the overall pace comfortable across two full weeks.

Practical Notes

A Uganda e-visa or East Africa Tourist Visa, arranged before travel, is required for most nationalities, along with a yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country with risk of transmission. Travel insurance covering trekking or wildlife activities and medical evacuation is strongly recommended, and malaria prevention is worth discussing with a travel health clinic ahead of your trip, particularly given time spent in lower-altitude savannah areas where mosquito exposure tends to be higher than in Uganda’s cooler forest destinations.

US dollars printed after 2009 are widely accepted for park fees, permits and lodge bills across this itinerary, while Ugandan shillings are more practical for tips, markets and smaller day-to-day purchases along the route. Mobile network coverage is generally reliable at lodges and along the main connecting roads, though it becomes patchy or unavailable inside the parks and forest reserves themselves.

Because permits and lodge availability are limited, particularly during the June to September and December to February peak seasons, we recommend booking this itinerary at least three to four months in advance for peak-season travel, with somewhat more flexibility available for the quieter shoulder months of March to May and September to November.

Tipping is customary though not compulsory across this itinerary. Rangers, trackers and guides typically receive a tip at the end of any trekking or guided activity, generally scaled to group size, while your driver-guide is usually tipped separately at the end of the full trip given their role extends across every day of the itinerary rather than a single activity.

A private 4×4 safari vehicle with an experienced English-speaking driver-guide accompanies you for the entire trip, handling both park game-viewing tracks and the road transfers this itinerary involves, with the same guide staying with you throughout rather than being swapped at each destination.

Gorilla Trekking Sectors in Bwindi

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is divided into four trekking sectors — Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, and Rushaga and Nkuringo in the south — each with its own habituated gorilla families and its own character. Buhoma offers the gentlest terrain and is the most established sector, with lodges close to the park gate. Rushaga has the highest concentration of habituated families and is also where gorilla habituation experience permits are issued, allowing visitors extended time with a family that is still being acclimatised to human presence. Ruhija sits at higher altitude with cooler mornings, while Nkuringo is known for its steep ridgeline approach and rewarding views over the forest canopy. Your guide assigns you to a specific family the morning of the trek based on fitness level and permit allocation, and treks can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours of hiking through dense, humid rainforest before the encounter.

Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise

The Kazinga Channel, a natural waterway linking Lake Edward and Lake George inside Queen Elizabeth National Park, is home to one of the largest concentrations of hippopotamus in Africa alongside Nile crocodiles, buffalo herds and an exceptional variety of water birds including pelicans, kingfishers and African fish eagles. A two-hour launch cruise along the channel is one of the most reliable wildlife-viewing activities in the park because animals gather along the banks to drink, offering close, unhurried sightings that game drives cannot always guarantee. The cruise is included as a core activity on itineraries through Queen Elizabeth and runs at set times in the late morning and afternoon to align with when wildlife activity along the water is highest.

Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest

Kibale Forest National Park protects one of the highest densities of primates in Africa, and its main draw is tracking habituated chimpanzee communities through the forest understory. Treks typically last one to three hours and reward visitors with close views of chimps feeding, grooming and moving through the canopy, along with their loud, distinctive pant-hoot calls echoing through the trees. Beyond chimpanzees, Kibale is home to eleven other primate species, including L’Hoest’s and red colobus monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys and the elusive nocturnal potto, making it a rewarding stop even beyond the headline chimp trek. For visitors wanting a deeper experience, a full-day chimpanzee habituation permit allows several hours with a community from dawn, following researchers as they carry out their morning routine.
