This 3 Days Mgahinga Gorilla Tour takes you to Uganda’s smallest national park and one of the most spectacular destinations for gorilla trekking in East Africa. Located in the southwestern corner of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park forms part of the greater Virunga Conservation Area that stretches across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The park covers approximately 33.7 square kilometers and is dominated by the majestic Virunga Volcanoes, creating some of the most breathtaking scenery in the region. Mgahinga is home to the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family, one of the most stable and easily accessible habituated gorilla groups in Uganda. Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer from Kampala or Entebbe to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Your driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel, residence, or Entebbe International Airport early in the morning and brief you about the safari before departure. Begin the journey toward southwestern Uganda through changing landscapes of bustling towns, rolling hills, farmlands, and traditional villages. A stop will be made at the Equator crossing point for photographs and refreshments before continuing westward.

The drive takes you through Mbarara, Kabale, and Kisoro districts, offering magnificent views of terraced hillsides, tea plantations, valleys, and the famous Ankole long-horned cattle. As you approach Kisoro, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic with volcanic peaks rising above the surrounding countryside.

A lunch stop will be made en route before continuing to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon or early evening. Depending on the time available, you may relax at the lodge while enjoying views of the Virunga Volcanoes or take a short walk around the surrounding community.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking and Batwa Cultural Experience

Wake up early and enjoy breakfast before transferring to the park headquarters for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers.

During the briefing, you will learn about gorilla trekking rules, safety procedures, and conservation efforts within the park. You will then be assigned a ranger guide and begin the trek into the forest in search of the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family.

The trek takes you through bamboo forests, montane vegetation, and scenic volcanic slopes. Depending on the gorillas’ location, the trek may last several hours. Once the gorilla family is located, you will spend one unforgettable hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watching mountain gorillas feed, groom, interact, and care for their young provides an extraordinary wildlife experience and a deeper appreciation of these endangered primates.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation.

In the afternoon, enjoy the Batwa Cultural Experience. The Batwa are the original forest inhabitants of the region and offer visitors an opportunity to learn about their traditional way of life. During the experience, you will discover traditional hunting techniques, medicinal plants, cultural practices, music, dance, and stories that have been passed down through generations.

Return to the lodge in the evening.

Day 3: Return to Kampala or Entebbe

After breakfast, check out of the lodge and begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe.

Enjoy one final opportunity to admire the spectacular landscapes of southwestern Uganda as you travel through rolling hills, valleys, tea plantations, and traditional villages. A lunch stop will be made along the route before continuing toward central Uganda. A brief stop may be made at the Equator crossing for refreshments and photographs before proceeding to your final destination.

Arrive in Kampala or Entebbe in the late afternoon or evening where your driver-guide will drop you off at your hotel, residence, or Entebbe International Airport.

Where Bwindi holds the majority of Uganda’s habituated families across four sectors, Mgahinga typically has only one habituated family available for trekking, a smaller, quieter park that sees considerably fewer visitors on any given day.

This makes Mgahinga a strong choice for travelers who have researched Bwindi’s more developed tourism infrastructure and specifically want a quieter alternative, even if that sometimes means less certainty around family availability on a given date compared to Bwindi’s larger network of habituated groups.

Mgahinga’s volcanic slopes also offer additional activities beyond gorilla trekking that Bwindi’s dense lowland forest cannot, including golden monkey trekking and, for fit travelers with extra time, day hikes up the park’s volcanic peaks, Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga and Mount Muhavura.

Batwa Cultural Encounters

This itinerary includes time with the Batwa community, the forest’s original inhabitants, who were resettled outside the park when it was gazetted for conservation in the early 1990s. A guided cultural visit offers insight into traditional forest-dwelling life, including demonstrations of traditional hunting and gathering techniques, medicinal plant knowledge, and music, providing context that complements the wildlife-focused sections of this trip.

Travel insurance covering trekking or wildlife activities and medical evacuation is strongly recommended, and malaria prevention is worth discussing with a travel health clinic ahead of your trip, particularly given this itinerary’s mix of forest and lower-altitude savannah environments.

Because Mgahinga typically has only one habituated gorilla family available, and permit numbers are correspondingly limited, we recommend confirming availability for this itinerary well ahead of your intended travel dates rather than assuming last-minute booking will work as it sometimes can for Bwindi’s larger network of families. Because permits and lodge availability are limited, particularly during the June to September and December to February peak seasons, we recommend booking this itinerary at least three to four months in advance for peak-season travel, with some flexibility possible for shoulder-season dates.

Tipping is customary though not compulsory across this itinerary. Rangers and trackers typically receive a tip at the end of any trekking activity, scaled to group size, while your driver-guide is usually tipped separately at the end of the full trip. This itinerary suits travelers who have researched both Bwindi and Mgahinga and specifically want the quieter, less-visited option, or those already planning to visit Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and want a Ugandan counterpart within the same volcanic range for comparison.

Physical Preparation for Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is graded as moderate to strenuous depending on where the assigned family is ranging that day. Trails climb steep, muddy ridges through tangled vegetation, and altitude in the park ranges from roughly 1,160 to 2,607 metres, so a reasonable level of fitness helps considerably. Porters are available at the trailhead for a small fee and are worth hiring — they carry daypacks, offer a steadying hand on slick sections, and their fee directly supports the local community bordering the park. Waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support, a long-sleeved shirt and trousers to guard against nettles and safari ants, gardening gloves, and a rain jacket are the essentials most trekkers wish they had packed. Because Bwindi sits in a genuine rainforest, showers are possible in any month, so dressing in breathable layers rather than heavy clothing keeps the trek comfortable.

Golden Monkey Trekking at Mgahinga

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, tucked into the Virunga volcanic range on Uganda’s border with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is one of the few places on earth where golden monkeys can be tracked in the wild. These endangered primates move in large, playful troops through the bamboo zone on the lower slopes of Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga and Mount Muhabura, and a trek typically takes less time and involves gentler terrain than gorilla trekking, making it a good option for travellers wanting a primate experience without a full-day hike. The park also protects a small population of transboundary mountain gorillas that move freely between Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, and on the years they are present in Uganda, gorilla permits are issued here as well.

Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda

Alongside its famous mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park is home to habituated troops of golden monkeys, an endangered species found only in the Albertine Rift’s bamboo forests. These highly active, gold-and-black primates move in large groups of up to 80 individuals and are considerably more energetic and vocal than gorillas, making for a lively, fast-paced trek as they leap through the bamboo canopy. Golden monkey permits are less expensive and less restricted than gorilla permits, and the trek is generally shorter and less physically demanding, making it a good complementary activity for travellers with an extra day in the park or those trekking with less experienced hikers.
