Zanzibar Archipelago

The Zanzibar Archipelago, a cluster of islands off Tanzania’s Indian Ocean coast, offers a striking contrast to the mainland’s savannah parks: white-sand beaches, turquoise water, and a centuries-deep trading history visible throughout Stone Town’s winding streets. The main island, Unguja, commonly referred to simply as Zanzibar, is the archipelago’s cultural and logistical centre, roughly a 20-minute flight or a few hours by ferry from Dar es Salaam.

Stone Town

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stone Town’s narrow alleyways, carved wooden doors and coral-stone buildings reflect centuries of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian and European influence, a legacy of Zanzibar’s role as a major Indian Ocean trading hub, particularly in spices and, more darkly, in the historical slave trade, documented at the town’s former slave market site.

Spice Tours

Zanzibar’s nickname, the “Spice Island,” reflects its history as a major global producer of cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper. Guided spice farm tours let visitors see, smell and taste these crops growing, alongside tropical fruit varieties, a genuinely different activity from the beach and marine focus of most island itineraries.

Beaches of the East and North Coast

Nungwi and Kendwa

The island’s northern tip offers some of Zanzibar’s most reliable swimming conditions, largely unaffected by the tidal swings that expose sandbars elsewhere on the island.

Paje and the Southeast Coast

Known for consistent wind conditions that have made it one of East Africa’s premier kitesurfing destinations, alongside calmer stretches better suited to swimming and relaxation.

Snorkelling and Diving

The Mnemba Atoll off the northeast coast is Zanzibar’s premier snorkelling and diving site, with clear water and healthy coral supporting a wide range of reef fish.

Dolphin Tours

Boat excursions from Kizimkazi on the southwest coast offer a chance to swim with resident pods of bottlenose and humpback dolphins, one of the archipelago’s most popular marine activities.

Prison Island and Jozani Forest

A short boat trip from Stone Town, Prison Island is home to a population of giant Aldabra tortoises, some over a century old, while Jozani Forest on the main island protects the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey, found nowhere else on earth.

Best Time to Visit

Zanzibar’s dry seasons, June to October and December to February, offer the most reliable beach weather, while the long rains from March to May bring lower prices and quieter beaches for travellers willing to accept a higher chance of showers.
