Best Time to Visit
Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed throughout the year, but the best trekking conditions are usually from January to March and June to October. These periods offer clearer skies, better trail conditions, and excellent summit views.
The months of June to October are especially popular because they coincide with Tanzania’s dry season, while January to March provides a quieter trekking experience with beautiful mountain scenery. The rainy seasons from April to May and November can make trails wetter, although experienced trekkers can still complete the climb with proper preparation.

A Well-Paced Kilimanjaro Climb
This eight-day itinerary gives a solid acclimatization schedule for the Kilimanjaro summit attempt, generally correlating with meaningfully higher summit success rates than the shortest five-day routes, since more time at altitude allows the body to properly adjust before the final push.
Depending on the specific route used, Machame, Lemosho or another approach, this itinerary passes through Kilimanjaro’s five distinct climate zones, from cultivated farmland at the base through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and finally arctic conditions near the summit.
Practical Notes
Most nationalities can apply for a Tanzania e-visa online before travel. A yellow fever certificate is required for entry if arriving from a country with risk of transmission. Travel insurance covering wildlife or trekking activities and medical evacuation is strongly recommended, and malaria prevention is worth discussing with a travel health clinic ahead of your trip.
Tanzanian shillings are useful for everyday purchases, tips and markets, while US dollars printed after 2009 are widely accepted for park fees, conservation fees and lodge bills. Most lodges also accept card payments for incidentals.
Because lodge and permit availability tightens considerably during the June to October peak season, we recommend booking this itinerary at least three to four months in advance for travel during that window.
Tipping is customary though not compulsory. Your driver-guide is typically tipped at the end of the full trip, scaled to group size and length of stay, and we’re glad to advise on typical ranges when you book.
Choosing Your Kilimanjaro Route
Different Kilimanjaro routes offer different trade-offs: Machame is the most popular route given its strong scenery and acclimatization profile, Lemosho offers a longer, less crowded approach from the west with among the highest summit success rates, and Marangu is the only route with hut accommodation rather than tents, though its shorter standard duration gives less acclimatization time.
We discuss route selection with every climber based on fitness level, prior altitude experience, and preference for crowd levels versus trekking hut comfort, since the right route genuinely depends on individual priorities rather than a single universally best option.
