Why Only About 1,000 Mountain Gorillas Remain in the Wild

Stand in a bamboo forest at 8,000 feet in the Virunga Mountains and you might hear them before you see them. A low chest-beat. A rustle in the undergrowth. Then a silverback the size of a refrigerator steps into a clearing and looks right at you. Fewer than 1,100 of these animals exist on the entire planet. That number should stop you. It is roughly the population of a single large high school, spread across three countries, holding on in patches of forest that keep shrinking.

The latest counts put the global mountain gorilla population at about 1,063 individuals, split between the Virunga Massif and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. That figure represents real progress. In 1981, researchers counted only 254 mountain gorillas left anywhere. But progress is not the same as safety, and understanding why only about 1,000 mountain gorillas remain in the wild means looking at decades of war, disease, habitat loss, and a conservation model that works only when everyone keeps paying attention.

The Collapse That Set the Baseline

Mountain gorillas were first documented by science in 1902, when a German officer named Friedrich Robert von Beringe shot two of them on the slopes of Mount Sabyinyo. That encounter set the tone for the next seventy years. Trophy hunters and collectors for zoos and museums killed gorillas by the dozens through the early 1900s. Then came a second wave of pressure: farmland expansion. As human populations grew across Rwanda, Uganda, and what was then Zaire, forests were cleared for crops and cattle, and the gorillas’ range shrank to isolated mountain pockets.

By the late 1970s, primatologist Dian Fossey and her colleagues estimated fewer than 300 mountain gorillas survived. Fossey spent years documenting individual gorillas by name in Rwanda’s Virunga forest, including a silverback called Digit, who was killed by poachers in 1977 while defending his group from a snare-setting party. His death drew international attention and became a turning point in fundraising for anti-poaching work in the region. Poaching for bushmeat and for infant gorillas destined for private collectors continued even inside protected areas. Snares set for antelope and other game caught gorillas by accident, and a gorilla caught in a wire snare can lose a hand or a foot, or die from infection before anyone finds it. Civil war in Rwanda in the 1990s pushed refugees and armed groups into gorilla habitat, and rangers were killed protecting animals they had spent years getting to know. Given that history, a population under 1,100 individuals is not a mystery. It is the arithmetic of a species that spent a century absorbing damage faster than it could recover from it.

Where the Remaining Gorillas Actually Live

Mountain gorillas exist in exactly two places on Earth, and nowhere else. That concentration is part of what makes their situation so fragile.

The Virunga Massif

The Virunga Massif is a chain of eight volcanoes straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Surveys from 2015 and 2016 counted roughly 604 gorillas here, up from 480 in 2010. The terrain is steep and cold at altitude, and the gorillas move between the three countries without regard for the border posts below them. Rangers from Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, and Congo’s Virunga National Park coordinate patrols across that shared ecosystem, which is unusual in conservation. Few endangered species have three governments actively cooperating on daily protection, especially when one of those governments is managing an active insurgency in the same park.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

The second population lives in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in southwestern Uganda, along with the nearby Sarambwe Forest Reserve just across the border in the DRC. Genetic testing during the 2018 census put this group at roughly 459 gorillas. Bwindi’s forest is older and denser than the Virunga volcanoes, thick with vines and thorny undergrowth, which is exactly why early European visitors called it impenetrable. Around half of all mountain gorillas alive today live inside this single park, which makes Bwindi one of the most consequential 128 square miles of forest on the continent.

Counting the gorillas themselves is slower and more careful than you might expect. Teams walk fixed transects through the forest searching for night nests, since each gorilla builds a fresh nest every evening out of bent branches and leaves. Researchers collect dung samples left at each nest and send them for genetic analysis, which lets scientists distinguish individuals and avoid counting the same gorilla twice. A full census across both habitats can take months of fieldwork and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, which is part of why counts only happen every five to ten years rather than annually.

What Has Actually Worked

Here is the part of the story that gets less attention than the crisis itself: mountain gorillas are the only great ape subspecies whose population is currently growing, not shrinking. The population grew by roughly 26 percent between the 2018 census and the most recent estimates. That did not happen by accident.

Daily ranger patrols in all three range countries locate and disable snares before they can injure an animal. Teams from Gorilla Doctors, a veterinary organization founded in the 1980s, treat wild gorillas for respiratory infections, snare wounds, and other injuries, sometimes performing field surgery on a fully grown silverback under sedation in the open forest. Because gorillas share about 98 percent of their DNA with humans, they can catch human illnesses like the flu or a common cold, so rangers and researchers working near habituated groups wear masks and keep a minimum distance during outbreaks of respiratory disease.

Tourism revenue funds most of this work. A gorilla trekking permit costs 1,500 dollars in Rwanda and 800 dollars in Uganda, and a large share of that money goes directly into park management, ranger salaries, and community development projects around park boundaries. That last part matters more than it might seem. Communities that earn income from gorilla tourism have a direct financial reason to support conservation rather than poaching or land conversion, and several villages around Bwindi and Volcanoes National Park now run their own tourism cooperatives, craft markets, and homestay programs built entirely around gorilla visitors.

The Threats That Have Not Gone Away

Growth in the numbers does not mean the danger has passed. This is where the answer to why only about 1,000 mountain gorillas remain in the wild gets uncomfortable, because most of the same pressures from decades ago are still active today, just in a different form.

Habitat loss continues at the edges of both parks, where farmland pushes right up against the forest boundary and leaves almost no buffer zone. Snares still injure gorillas every year, even with daily patrol coverage, because a single poacher can set dozens of wire traps in an afternoon and rangers cannot check every square mile of steep terrain daily. Disease remains a constant risk precisely because gorillas are habituated to human presence for tourism and research, which is the same closeness that makes conservation funding possible in the first place. The Democratic Republic of Congo’s portion of Virunga National Park has seen repeated armed conflict, and rangers there have died in the line of duty at a rate almost unheard of in any other protected area on Earth. Climate change is starting to shift the vegetation gorillas depend on at higher elevations, a slower threat but one that conservationists are only beginning to model.

Add all of that together and you get a population that can grow in good years and still face a real risk of reversal if any single piece of the protection system fails. A war that displaces rangers, a disease outbreak that spreads through a habituated group, a drop in tourism revenue during a global crisis. Any one of those could undo years of recovery quickly. In 2020, when international tourism stopped almost overnight, park revenue in Rwanda and Uganda dropped by more than half within a few months, and rangers had to keep patrolling on reduced budgets while nearby communities lost income they had come to depend on. Conservation groups covered some of the gap with emergency grants, but the episode showed how quickly the funding model behind this recovery can be tested.

None of this is a reason to assume the population will keep climbing on its own. Wildlife biologists who study small, isolated populations point out that even a group of 1,000 animals split across two disconnected habitats carries genetic risks that a larger, more widely distributed species would not face. Limited gene flow between the Virunga and Bwindi populations, since the two groups do not interbreed, means each group is effectively managing its own smaller gene pool. That is one more reason why only about 1,000 mountain gorillas remain in the wild is not just a historical question. It describes a present condition that still requires active management, not a problem that conservation has already solved.

Why the Recovery Story Still Matters

There is a version of this story that ends in despair, and it would be the easier one to write. Instead, mountain gorillas offer something rarer in conservation: proof that a species can be pulled back from under 300 individuals to over 1,000 through sustained, coordinated human effort across three countries with very different governments and very different resources.

If you ever get the chance to sit near a mountain gorilla family, you will notice how unhurried they are. A juvenile might tumble past your boots chasing a sibling. A mother grooms an infant while the silverback watches the group with an attention that feels almost administrative. None of that scene exists by luck. It exists because rangers walked those slopes that morning checking for snares, because a veterinary team treated a wound last month, because a family in a village nearby earns a living from the permit fee you paid to be there. Understanding why only about 1,000 mountain gorillas remain in the wild is really a story about what it takes to keep a species alive once it has already come close to disappearing, and about how thin the margin still is between a growing population and a lost one.
