15 Days Uganda Leisure Holiday Safaris
Overview
This 15 Days Uganda Leisure Holiday Safari is our most complete Uganda itinerary, built for travellers who want to experience the country at an unhurried pace rather than ticking off parks on a tight schedule. Over two full weeks you’ll travel from the source of the Nile in Jinja to the remote plains of Kidepo Valley in Uganda’s far north, through the primate forests of Kibale and Bwindi, and across the wildlife-rich savannahs of Queen Elizabeth and Lake Mburo.
Our driver-guides, many of whom have spent over a decade working these exact routes, have paced this itinerary so that no single day feels rushed, with built-in rest afternoons at Lake Bunyonyi and Jinja between the more active wildlife days.
This is a fully private, customisable safari. Every lodge, activity and travel date on this page can be adjusted to match your budget, interests and available time before you book.
Two full weeks also means you are not forced to choose between Uganda’s celebrated parks and its lesser-known corners. Where a typical week-long safari has to leave something out, this itinerary makes room for the Karamoja region’s cattle-keeping culture, the Rift Valley’s crater lakes, and quiet mornings on Lake Bunyonyi that most visitors never get to experience, alongside the primate and wildlife encounters Uganda is best known for.
Why This Itinerary Goes Further Than a Standard Uganda Safari
Most Uganda safaris cover four or five parks in a week to ten days. This 15-day version adds two destinations most visitors never reach: Kidepo Valley National Park, a semi-arid wilderness on the Uganda-South Sudan border that feels closer to the Serengeti than anything else in the country, and a full rest day at Lake Bunyonyi, one of Africa’s deepest lakes, ringed by 29 islands and terraced hillsides. The result is a trip that still covers Uganda’s core wildlife and primate experiences, but gives you room to actually absorb each place rather than sleeping in a different bed every night.
Your Destinations in Depth
Jinja
Jinja sits at the point where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria on its 6,650-kilometre journey to the Mediterranean, and has grown into East Africa’s adventure sports capital. Its grade three to five rapids draw white-water rafters from around the world, while quieter sunset boat cruises suit travellers who would rather watch the river than ride it.
Sipi Falls
Set on the lower slopes of Mount Elgon, an extinct shield volcano straddling the Uganda-Kenya border, Sipi Falls is actually three separate waterfalls threading through Arabica coffee country. The region is one of Uganda’s main coffee-growing areas, and a farm-to-cup tour here is as much a cultural experience as a scenic one.
Kidepo Valley National Park
Frequently described by seasoned safari-goers as Africa’s best-kept secret, Kidepo Valley sits in Uganda’s far northeastern corner bordering South Sudan and Kenya. Its dry, open Narus Valley supports large herds of buffalo, zebra and eland alongside cheetahs, a species absent from Uganda’s other parks, plus over 475 recorded bird species. Because it receives a fraction of the visitors that Uganda’s southern parks do, game drives here often feel like having the entire park to yourselves.
Murchison Falls National Park
Uganda’s largest national park is named for the point where the entire Victoria Nile squeezes through a gorge less than eight metres wide before dropping 43 metres into the gorge below, one of the most dramatic sights on any East African itinerary.
Kibale Forest National Park
Kibale holds the highest primate density of any park in Africa, including around 1,500 chimpanzees, and its ranger-guides are trained specifically in habituation work to bring you safely close to family groups.
Queen Elizabeth National Park
Best known for the Kazinga Channel’s hippo and bird concentrations and the Ishasha sector’s rare tree-climbing lions, Queen Elizabeth links craters, lakes and open savannah across Uganda’s western Rift Valley.
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, Bwindi’s ancient rainforest is where this itinerary’s signature gorilla trek takes place.
Lake Bunyonyi
One of the few lakes in the region considered free of bilharzia, Lake Bunyonyi is safe for swimming and ringed by 29 islands and steeply terraced hillsides, making it one of the most photographed landscapes in southwestern Uganda.

Best Time to Go
Uganda’s two dry seasons, December to February and June to September, offer the firmest trekking conditions in Bwindi and Kibale and the easiest driving on the long stretch north to Kidepo Valley. Kidepo itself is best visited in the dry season, when wildlife concentrates around the Narus Valley’s remaining water sources, making sightings more reliable. The wetter months bring lush green scenery and fewer crowds at every stop, and gorilla trekking runs year-round regardless of season since Bwindi is rainforest by nature.
Fitness, Permits and What to Pack
This itinerary includes two forest treks: gorilla trekking in Bwindi and chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, both on uneven, sometimes muddy terrain lasting two to six hours round trip. A moderate fitness level is sufficient, and porters are available at both parks to help carry bags and assist on steep sections. Gorilla permits are limited to eight visitors per habituated family per day, so we book yours well ahead of your travel dates to secure your preferred trekking date.
- Sturdy, ankle-supporting hiking boots
- Long-sleeved neutral-coloured clothing for forest treks
- A light rain jacket for all seasons
- Gardening gloves for gripping vegetation
- Insect repellent and sun protection
- Binoculars, especially valuable in Kidepo’s open plains
- A warm layer for cool early mornings in Kidepo and Sipi
Conservation and Community Impact
Because this itinerary reaches Kidepo Valley, one of Uganda’s least-visited parks, your visit directly supports conservation funding and community revenue-sharing in a region that receives only a fraction of the tourism traffic of Uganda’s southern parks. Gorilla permit fees in Bwindi fund ranger patrols and veterinary monitoring of habituated families, while community walks in Bigodi and canoe excursions in Bunyonyi put income directly into the hands of local guides and cooperatives rather than large operators.
Tourism to Karamoja and Kidepo also plays a quiet but meaningful role in the region’s development, funding schools, clinics and water projects in an area that has historically received far less national investment than the rest of Uganda. Where possible, we route accommodation and activity bookings through locally owned operations to keep more of your trip’s value inside the communities you pass through, rather than routing it through operators based elsewhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 15 days too long for a first trip to Uganda?
Not at all. The pace is deliberately gentle, with rest afternoons built in at Jinja and Lake Bunyonyi, and most travellers tell us the extra days spent reaching Kidepo Valley and Sipi Falls, places a shorter itinerary would skip entirely, become the highlight of the trip.
Can we skip Kidepo Valley if we’re short on time?
Yes, we can adjust this itinerary down to 10 or 12 days by removing the Kidepo and Sipi Falls sections, or replace the long road transfer north with a scheduled flight to cut travel time significantly.
Do I need a visa and vaccinations for Uganda?
Most nationalities can apply for a Uganda e-visa online before departure. A yellow fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry, and we recommend speaking to a travel health clinic about malaria prevention.
Is Kidepo Valley safe to visit?
Kidepo Valley is patrolled by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and is a well-established part of Uganda’s safari circuit, though its remoteness means longer drives and fewer facilities than the southern parks, which is part of what keeps it so untouched.
Can this trip be arranged for a family with children?
Yes, though most parks set a minimum age of 15 for gorilla trekking. Families travelling with younger children often keep the wildlife and adventure days and substitute the gorilla trekking day for extra game viewing or a guided nature walk instead.
How much driving is involved in this itinerary?
This is the trade-off for reaching Kidepo Valley: two of the fifteen days are largely transfer days, broken up with stops, scenic viewpoints and comfort breaks along the way. Travellers who would rather minimise road time can replace the Kidepo road transfer with a scheduled light-aircraft flight, which we can arrange as part of your booking.
What currency and payment methods work best in Uganda?
US dollars printed after 2009 are widely accepted for park fees, permits and lodge bills, while Uganda shillings are useful for local markets, tips and smaller purchases. Most lodges on this itinerary accept card payments, though we recommend carrying some cash for the more remote stops in Kidepo and Sipi Falls.
Is mobile signal available throughout the trip?
Coverage reaches most towns and lodges on this route, though it becomes unreliable in Kidepo Valley’s remote interior and inside the forest during gorilla and chimpanzee treks. Most lodges offer Wi-Fi in communal areas as a backup.
Group Sizes, Vehicles and Guides
This itinerary runs as a fully private safari using a 4×4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof hatch for photography and game viewing, matched to the size of your group. A single dedicated driver-guide, licensed and certified by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, stays with you for all 15 days rather than handing you off at each park boundary. Many of our guides have worked this exact northern-and-western circuit for over a decade and know which lodge terraces catch the best light at Sipi Falls and which Kidepo waterholes tend to draw wildlife at different times of year.
Photography Notes
Kidepo Valley’s open plains reward a longer zoom lens and offer some of the clearest game-viewing light in Uganda, especially in the golden hour after the morning game drive begins. Forest light in Bwindi and Kibale is far dimmer and shiftier, so a camera that performs well at higher ISO will matter more than raw zoom range. Carry spare batteries; humidity in the forest sections and long driving days between charges both drain them faster than expected.
Extend or Combine This Trip
- Rwanda gorilla trekking: trek a second, distinct gorilla family in Volcanoes National Park via a short transfer from Kigali.
- Zanzibar beach stay: unwind on Zanzibar’s beaches for four or five days after this itinerary through our Tanzania desk.
- Extra Kidepo nights: travellers who fall for Kidepo’s remoteness often add one or two nights to explore the Kanangorok hot springs and Morungole community.
Health, Insurance and Travel Documents
Comprehensive travel insurance covering trip cancellation, medical evacuation and adventure activities such as white-water rafting and gorilla trekking is strongly recommended, since Kidepo’s remoteness in particular means a longer wait for specialist medical care than travellers are used to at home. Carry a passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, your approved Uganda e-visa, and your yellow fever vaccination certificate, with copies stored separately from the originals.
Why Travel With All in Africa Safaris
We are a Uganda-based operator, and this itinerary reflects routes our own guides have driven repeatedly, not a route assembled from a map. We personally vet every lodge recommended above at each comfort tier, keep this trip private to your group rather than bundling you with strangers, and remain your direct point of contact from planning through to your departure flight home. Every detail on this page, from pace to lodge choice, can be adjusted before you book.
A Note From the Road
Guides who have run this circuit often mention the same turning point in feedback from travellers: the moment, somewhere on the long drive north past Karamojong cattle herders and dry acacia plains, when Kidepo stops feeling like an add-on and starts feeling like the reason they came. It is a different Uganda from the greener, more visited south, and having fifteen days rather than seven or ten is what makes room for both versions of the country on a single trip.
